MISSION STATEMENT

Friends of Children, Inc. serves the needs of children through individual case advocacy and support of coordinated programs and policies to improve their lives.

Speaking up. One Child at a Time.

Friends of Children, Inc., is an independent, non-profit child advocacy organization dedicated to improving the lives of children in Western Massachusetts. We’re a voice for children who have no one else to speak for them.

FOC was founded in 1988, when a group of concerned citizens began fundraising to support local children’s programs. Our focus shifted to include advocacy when the state closed its child advocacy agency, the Office for Children.

FOC helps families in a rural, 3000 square-mile area that face many of the same issues that urban families do: there is violence at home and in the community, many kids drop out of school, and drug and alcohol abuse is very common.

Who are Friends of Children?

An active, volunteer Board of Directors guides the work of the agency, along with the Executive Director, who reports directly to the Board. the Board is comprised of community members including: attorneys, business leaders, medical professionals, a social service worker, and others.

The FOC Staff includes the Executive Director, one full-time Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Volunteer Coordinator, a part-time Adolescent Advocacy Mentoring Project Coordinator (AAMP), a part-time Administrative Assistant/Bookkeeper, and Child Advocate consultants.

To succeed, FOC depends on a very active group of volunteers. Volunteer Coordinators are responsible for the recruitment, screening, supervision and training of all CASA members and Adolescent Mentors for foster youth. Volunteers work with the Board of Directors, assist staff members in the office, participate on committees, and help with fundraising.
